Date:2024-01-19     Source:Elkem

Elkem's BioSiMS project has recently received a funding of 17 million Norwegian kroner (about $1.64 million) from the Research Council of Norway. Focusing on Elkem's climate strategy, the project aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by increasing the use of biochar in smelting production.

The BioSiMS project, set to run from 2024 to 2026, will involve collaboration with partners, including the Norwegian Institute of Technology, University of Agder, and the Future Materials Norwegian Catapult Centre. Elkem's primary objectives for this project encompass several key areas. These include supporting the company's climate strategy by increasing the utilization of biochar in smelting production, ensuring the quality of end products such as silicon, ferrosilicon, and microsilica, guaranteeing the safe and efficient operation of furnaces during the transition to bio-based raw materials, and ensuring efficient and high-quality production processes.

The Research Council of Norway is an official organization that provides strategic decisions and funding for research activities in Norway. It advises the Norwegian government, administrative agencies, and research institutions on research policies, promotes collaboration within the research system, and facilitates the industrialization of research outcomes.
