On November 15 local time, the new energy recovery plant at Bluestar Elkem Salten in the northern part of Norway was officially launched. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre visited the site and unveiled the new plant.
The new energy recovery plant will recover 28% of the electrical energy used at Elkem Salten, equivalent to the power consumption of about 15,000 Norwegian households. Together with other energy recovery units, the plant brings the total energy recovery of Elkem to approximately 900 GWh per year, similar to the capacity of the largest wind park in Norway. The energy recovery plant, built in partnership between Elkem and financing partners, represents an investment around NOK 1.2 billion. Enova, the Norwegian government’s funding agency for energy efficiency improvements, has approved a grant of up to NOK 350 million, the third largest industry grant that Enova has ever provided.
Elkem has been very active in fulfilling its responsibility of green development. It aims to reduce its total fossil CO2 emissions by 28% from 2020 to 2031 and finally achieve the long-term goal of zero net carbon emissions by 2050.
